Indian Health Authorities Address Concerns Over HMPV Amid Outbreak in China

Amid reports of an outbreak of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China, Indian health authorities have reassured the public that the virus poses no significant threat and is comparable to other respiratory viruses causing cold-like symptoms. Officials emphasized that the situation does not warrant undue concern while urging adherence to standard precautions.

Dr. Atul Goel, Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), addressed the issue, stating, “HMPV spread in China is like any other respiratory virus that causes cold. There is no need for alarm.” He clarified that HMPV typically results in mild symptoms, although it can cause flu-like illnesses in vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and young children. Additionally, Dr. Goel noted that a review of respiratory outbreaks within India showed no unusual rise in cases during December 2024.

The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), operating under the Union Health Ministry, is closely monitoring respiratory infections across the country. According to sources, the NCDC is in regular communication with international health agencies to track developments and validate information. Authorities assured that updates will be provided as needed while continuing their surveillance efforts.

In China, a spike in respiratory illnesses, including seasonal influenza, rhinovirus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and HMPV, has been reported between December 16 and 22, 2024. Overwhelmed hospitals and strained healthcare systems have raised concerns, particularly regarding the rise in HMPV cases. However, the World Health Organization’s Western Pacific Region Office (WPRO) noted that the overall intensity of respiratory diseases in China this year is lower than in 2023, attributing the seasonal increase to winter conditions in the northern hemisphere.

Health experts have stressed the importance of enhanced vigilance. Dr. Arjun Dang, CEO of Dr Dangs Lab, highlighted the need for early detection and surveillance. He remarked, “The resurgence of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) underscores the ever-evolving challenges posed by respiratory viruses, particularly in high-density populations. HMPV, a relatively underrecognized pathogen, has been a silent contributor to seasonal respiratory illnesses globally.”

Indian authorities reiterated that there is no immediate cause for alarm while encouraging preventive measures. With active monitoring and collaborative efforts, India aims to stay ahead of any potential public health concerns.
