Sikkim Government Issues New Guidelines for Restaurants, Pubs, and Discotheques

The Urban Development Department of the Government of Sikkim has issued a new set of regulations for the operation of restaurants, pubs, and discotheques across the state. The notification, released on Wednesday, follows recent announcements by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang and aims to regulate nightlife while ensuring public safety.

Key highlights of the new rules include:

  • Closing Time: All restaurants, pubs, and discotheques must close by 11 PM.
  • Entry Restrictions: Individuals under the age of 21 and students in uniform are prohibited from entering these establishments.
  • Alcohol Consumption: No liquor or alcoholic beverages may be served to individuals under 21 or to students in uniform, in line with the state’s Excise laws.

Establishments that fail to comply with these rules will face severe penalties. The notification states that violations could result in:

  • Suspension of trade licenses.
  • A fine of ₹50,000.
  • In extreme cases, the revocation of trade licenses under Section 13 of the Sikkim Trade Licence and Miscellaneous Rules, 2011.

The government’s decision has sparked mixed reactions from the public. While many residents and parents have supported the move, seeing it as a necessary measure to protect young people from underage drinking, some members of the hospitality industry have expressed concerns about the potential negative impact on their businesses.

These regulations are part of the state government’s broader effort to promote responsible nightlife and ensure the safety of its citizens.
