Workshop on Space Technology and Geospatial Advancements Held in Tamulpur District
A workshop on space technology and geospatial advancements was held on January 9 in the Conference Hall of the Tamulpur District Commissioner’s office in Assam, aimed at promoting the use of space technology for regional development.
Organized by the Assam State Space Application Centre (ASSAC) under the Department of Science, Technology, and Climate Change, Government of Assam, the event was held in collaboration with the district administration.
The workshop was inaugurated by P.L.N. Raju, Director of ASSAC, who emphasized the transformative potential of space-based solutions in making Tamulpur a model district. The District Commissioner of Tamulpur, Pankaj Chakravarty, addressed the pressing issue of human-elephant conflict in the region, highlighting the role of space technology in tackling such challenges.
A key moment of the event was the unveiling of a booklet focused on Tamulpur’s development prospects, specially prepared by the ASSAC team.
The workshop began with a presentation by P.L.N. Raju on the various applications of space technology and geospatial tools in improving governance, resource management, and planning. Dr. B.K. Handique from the North Eastern Space Application Centre (NESAC) shared insights on the importance of space technology for Assam and the northeast region.
Utpal Sharma, Additional Director of ASSAC, delivered an in-depth overview of Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) applications, focusing on their utility in resource management. Nilay Nishant from NESAC demonstrated advanced tools, including mobile apps and dashboards such as NESDR, NRSC, and ISRO Bhuvan, designed to improve governance and service delivery.
The workshop also featured presentations by leading scientists and officials from ASSAC, including Runjun Baruah, Kaustav Baruah, Debashis Baruah, Dr. Kalyanjit Sharma, and Pranjit Kalita, who shared their expertise on space technology applications. Virtual contributions were made by Shashikant Sharma from SAC ISRO, Ahmedabad, and Dr. Harish Karnatak from the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), Dehradun.
Senior district officials, including Additional District Commissioners, Assistant Commissioners, and department heads, attended the workshop, marking a significant step towards integrating advanced technology for sustainable development in Tamulpur district.
