In a significant ruling, the Gauhati High Court addressed multiple writ petitions challenging the delimitation process for Gaon Panchayats in Assam, citing alleged violations of the Assam Panchayat Act and its rules. The petitioners sought to halt the delimitation process and annul the final delimitation list.
During the hearing, the court clarified that its earlier orders from December 17, 2024, applied exclusively to nine specific writ petitions and did not extend to other pending cases. The court emphasized the constitutional obligation to conduct Panchayat elections within the stipulated timeframe and acknowledged the state’s commitment to proceeding with the electoral schedule.
The ruling also took into account several new writ petitions filed during the proceedings. Each case, the court stated, would be reviewed individually based on its specific merits. It scheduled WP(C) No. 48/2025 for further hearings and issued notices to the relevant parties.
While legal challenges to the delimitation process remain unresolved, the court’s decision enables the State Election Commission to proceed with the Panchayat elections as planned, ensuring adherence to constitutional mandates.
