Preparations in Full Swing as Sonitpur Gears Up for Lok Sabha Elections

As the countdown to the first phase of Lok Sabha elections in Assam begins, the electoral machinery in Sonitpur district is operating at full throttle to ensure a smooth and efficient voting process for the electorate. With over 1800 polling stations established in the Sonitpur parliamentary constituency, authorities are leaving no stone unturned in their preparations.

The dispatch of polling parties to their designated stations commenced from Darrang College in Sonitpur district, signaling the meticulous planning undertaken by the district election office. Nearly 5000 polling personnel are being deployed for 1100 polling stations, emphasizing the comprehensive approach to electoral management.

Kavita Kakati Konwar, Additional District Commissioner of Sonitpur District, shed light on the extensive arrangements made for the elections. More than 10,000 polling personnel have been deployed for the Sonitpur Lok Sabha seat, with special emphasis on model polling stations, including around 150 designated as women-only stations.

Highlighting the proactive measures implemented, Anurag Goel, Chief Electoral Officer of Assam, reiterated the commitment to a fair electoral process. GPS tracking devices have been installed in vehicles carrying Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), while satellite phones are provided in remote areas to ensure communication reliability.

To encourage widespread voter turnout, a “dry day” has been declared 48 hours before the polls, and a paid holiday is granted to facilitate voter participation. Additionally, measures such as information guides and braille ballot papers for visually impaired voters aim to assist voters in exercising their democratic rights.

The Election department in Assam has also prioritized transparency and oversight, with webcasting in critical polling stations and over 11,000 cameras deployed for monitoring purposes.

With approximately 86.47 lakh voters expected to cast their votes across 10,001 polling stations in the first phase, the electoral landscape of Assam is poised for a significant democratic exercise, reflecting the collective aspirations and voices of the electorate.
