Assam: Mamata Banerjee Faces Backlash for Allegedly Disrespecting Assamese Symbol During Silchar Visit

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s visit to Assam’s Silchar took an unexpected turn as she allegedly refused to accept a traditional Assamese symbol, the self-respecting gamosa, during a reception in the state amidst the Rongali Bihu festivities.

Reports suggest that Banerjee’s refusal to accept the gamosa offered to her has ignited controversy, drawing condemnation from various quarters, including the Bihu Kristi Parishad, Assam, which has demanded an apology.

Narhari Chutia, vice-president of the Bihu Kristi Parishad, emphasized that such disrespect towards the gamosa, a revered symbol in Assamese culture, would not be tolerated.

Banerjee’s arrival in Silchar was part of her election campaign for the Lok Sabha polls, where she was greeted by Assam Trinamool Congress president Ripun Bora and party leader Sushmita Dev at the Silchar airport.

Despite their efforts to present her with a gamosa, Banerjee reportedly declined to accept it.The incident has sparked criticism, particularly given the gamosa’s cultural significance in Assam. The gamosa, traditionally woven with motifs symbolizing prosperity and dignity, holds deep-rooted importance in Assamese rituals and ceremonies.

Banerjee’s rally at the Silchar Town Club ground, scheduled for 1 pm, proceeded amidst the controversy, with reactions pouring in regarding the perceived insult to Assamese culture.
