Geeta Gopinath in new IMF charge

Indian-origin American Geeta Gopinath, chief economist of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), has been promoted to the first deputy managing director of the company. The information was released yesterday from the IMF. Geeta Gopinath will take charge of the post in the first half of the coming year. Geeta Gopinath will be replaced by outgoing deputy managing director Jiufri Okam’to.

It may be recalled that Geeta Gopinath was scheduled to return to the post of professor at Harvard University in January 2022. Gopinath was given the responsibility of three years as the IMF’s chief scientist. But there is uncertainty about Gopinath returning to Harvard to get new responsibilities.
