Death toll from Bengal Factory Explosion rises to 9
Guwahati: Nine people have passed away and several others have been injured in the enormous explosion that occurred at a firecrackers plant in West Bengal, reports emerged on Wednesday.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has opened an investigation into the incident on instructions from the state government.
Notably, a massive explosion occurred at a factory that makes firecrackers in the West Medinipur area. According to reports, the explosion caused the entire building where the fireworks factory was housed to collapse. Following the explosion, emergency rescue efforts were started.
Police officers predicted that once the rescue efforts are complete, more bodies would likely be found. The incident’s victims were transported to a local hospital where they are reportedly in severe condition.
The police were investigating the situation and attempting to determine what caused the explosion. Officials believe that the plant was used to create crude bombs, some of which may have burst and burned the fireworks. According to officials, it is most likely that the unrefined bombs are to blame for the explosion.
As reported by the residents, it later came to light that the fireworks factory was operating illegally without the required permits and oversight from the local authority, including the police.
Locals also claimed that the administration ignored repeated pleas for action against the illegal factory that has grown to employ many people of the area.
