Australia Appoints Philip Green as its New Envoy to India

Guwahati: Philip Green has been appointed as Australia’s new high commissioner to India, succeeding Barry O’Farrell, who has held the position since 2020. Green, a senior career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, formerly represented Australia in Germany as well as Singapore, South Africa, and Kenya as High Commissioner.

The nomination was made official on June 16 by Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, who noted that relations between Australia and India have never been closer. In order to achieve a peaceful, secure, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region where sovereignty is respected, she said both countries are working together through the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and as Quad partners. They also share viewpoints, problems, and a democratic legacy.

“Today I announce the appointment of Mr Philip Green OAM as Australia’s next High Commissioner to India. Mr Green is a senior career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and was most recently Australia’s Ambassador to Germany. He has previously served overseas as Australia’s High Commissioner to Singapore, to South Africa, and to Kenya,” the minister said in a release.

Green will also serve as the Kingdom of Bhutan’s High Commissioner. According to Wong, Australia and India have a strong economic relationship that will grow as they try to complete a comprehensive economic cooperation agreement.
