Block-Level Awareness Program and “Calf Rally” Mark World Veterinary Day in Soreng District

A block-level awareness program focusing on prevalent livestock diseases such as PPR, FMD, and Brucellosis, alongside a vibrant “Calf Rally,” commemorated “World Veterinary Day” with the theme “Veterinarians are essential health workers” at the Government Secondary School playground in Hattidhunga, Sanga-Dorjee GPU, under Soreng district on April 28.

The event witnessed the participation of esteemed guests, including Panchayat members from Sanga-Dorjee GPU, Dr Kishore Thapa, Additional Director of AH&VS Department, officers from AH&VS Soreng, center in-charges, staff from various Veterinary Centers of Soreng district, along with 70 farmers and 31 calf rally participants from various villages of Kaluk block, Soreng district.

Commending the initiative, the Panchayat President of Sanga-Dorjee GPU extended gratitude to the department for organizing the program and urged farmers to actively engage in such initiatives for their welfare. He also conveyed wishes to the Veterinary fraternity for their invaluable contributions.

The Additional Director shed light on the significance of World Veterinary Day and elucidated various departmental schemes and programs aimed at livestock welfare, including PPIS, vaccination drives against livestock diseases, and livestock census. He lauded the participants of the Calf Rally, emphasizing its role in motivating farmers to adopt improved livestock-rearing practices. Furthermore, he assured that similar programs would be conducted in the future to reach remote areas within the district.

Dr Sharin Gurung, VO cum MVU Soreng, delivered an insightful presentation on livestock diseases, their control, and management through a PowerPoint.

Highlighting the competitive spirit, the program featured a calf rally where 31 calves aged 3 months to 1 year participated. Judging criteria encompassed parameters such as pedigree, body conformation, cleanliness, general health, posture, and gait.

The winners of the competition, Birkha Bdr Gazmer securing the 1st Position, Sahil Subba the 2nd Position, and Sandesh Sharma the 3rd Position, were awarded cash prizes of Rs 5000, Rs 4000, and Rs 3000 respectively. Additionally, each participant received a cash prize of Rs 1000 along with mineral mixture and dewormers, promoting scientific livestock rearing practices.
