Oprah Winfrey Addresses Harmful Diet Culture Influence

During a three-hour live WeightWatchers special, media icon Oprah Winfrey bravely confronted her role in perpetuating harmful diet culture. Admitting her active participation in this culture through various platforms over the years, Winfrey expressed remorse for her past actions.

Reflecting on her history of weight-loss shows and makeovers, Winfrey confessed, “I cannot tell you how many weight-loss shows and makeovers I have done.” She particularly highlighted a regretful moment when she showcased 67 pounds of fat she lost after a month-long, liquid-only fast, acknowledging the unhealthy message it conveyed.

Joined by actors Rebel Wilson, Amber Riley, and Busy Philipps, alongside WeightWatchers CEO Sima Sistani and medical professionals, Winfrey discussed the brand’s evolution towards prioritizing overall health over dieting. They emphasized body acceptance and the destigmatization of medical interventions for weight loss.

Winfrey expressed relief and redemption in the availability of medically approved prescriptions for managing weight and health, signaling a positive shift in societal attitudes. To ensure transparency and avoid conflicts of interest, she resigned from the WeightWatchers board of directors and donated her shares to the National Museum of African American History and Culture. This move underscores her commitment to promoting healthier approaches to weight management and dismantling harmful diet culture narratives.
