Bharat Basnet Resigns as President of Sikkim’s Citizen Action Party

June 4, 2024 — Bharat Basnet, president of Sikkim’s Citizen Action Party (CAP) and a prominent MP candidate, has stepped down from his position on moral grounds. His resignation marks a significant shift in the party’s leadership landscape.

Basnet’s departure comes in the wake of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) solidifying its dominance in the state. In the recent Lok Sabha elections, SKM’s sitting Member of Parliament, Indra Hang Subba, won decisively against Basnet, securing a margin of 78,766 votes.

Indra Hang Subba expressed heartfelt gratitude towards the electorate, stating, “People were pro-incumbent this time. We have actually increased our majority in the Assembly as well as in the parliamentary seats. The Sikkimese people have reposed their faith in us once again, trusting our party, our leadership under Prem Singh Tamang, and all other MLAs and leaders from the SKM party.”

Subba further emphasized that the SKM will undertake constructive measures for the development of Sikkim. Regarding the party’s alliance with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), he commented, “We have just won. The party will be deciding this thing. It will be public very soon.”

Basnet’s resignation from CAP’s leadership introduces a period of transition for the party, as it contemplates its future direction and strategy in Sikkim’s political arena.
