Savitri Jindal Clinches Hisar Assembly Seat, Marking Triumphant Political Comeback
Savitri Jindal, India’s wealthiest woman and chairperson of the O.P. Jindal Group, secured a decisive victory in the Hisar constituency during Haryana’s Assembly elections, winning by a margin of 19,000 votes. Running as an independent candidate, she garnered 49,231 votes after 12 rounds of counting, outperforming Congress candidate Ram Niwas Rara, who received 30,290 votes, and incumbent BJP MLA Kamal Gupta, who finished with 17,385 votes.
In her victory speech, Jindal expressed her support for the current BJP-led government and pledged to work towards the development of Hisar, highlighting her dedication to the constituency’s progress. Her triumph marks a significant comeback in Haryana politics, as she once again steps into the political spotlight.
Jindal’s journey is remarkable, with a life that spans the worlds of both business and politics. Born on March 20, 1950, in Tinsukia, Assam, Jindal’s early life bore little resemblance to her future stature. Her transformation began when she married O.P. Jindal in the 1970s. O.P. Jindal, the founder of the Jindal Group, was a prominent industrialist and political figure in Haryana. After his sudden death in a helicopter crash in 2005, Jindal found herself at a crossroads. At the age of 55, she took over both the family business and her late husband’s political legacy.
Under Jindal’s leadership, the O.P. Jindal Group experienced remarkable growth, with its companies like JSW Steel, Jindal Steel and Power, and Jindal Saw Limited flourishing. She skillfully quadrupled the group’s turnover, earning respect as both a businesswoman and political leader.
Her political career began shortly after O.P. Jindal’s death, winning a by-election for the Hisar Assembly seat. She later served in Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s cabinet, managing crucial portfolios such as revenue, disaster management, and urban development. Though she faced a setback in the 2014 elections, her 2024 victory marks a powerful return to Haryana politics, demonstrating her resilience and political acumen.
Savitri Jindal’s election win not only signifies her enduring influence but also solidifies her commitment to the people of Hisar, signaling the beginning of a new chapter in her storied career.
