Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Lays Foundation for India’s Second VLF Communication Station in Telangana

On Tuesday, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh laid the foundation stone for India’s second very low frequency (VLF) communication transmission station in the Vikarabad district of Telangana. This significant development marks a key enhancement in India’s maritime communication capabilities.

During the ceremony, Singh highlighted the strategic importance of the new VLF station, which will enable secure, real-time communication between India’s maritime forces, both on land and at sea. Emphasizing the necessity of secure communications for operational success, Singh stated, “The VLF station we are establishing today is critical for ensuring strong, real-time connectivity for our maritime forces. This station plays a pivotal role in securing our maritime interests, as secure communication can often be the determining factor between victory and defeat.”

Singh also reflected on the broader advancements in communication technology over the past two to three decades. He noted that many technological capabilities, once thought to be out of reach, have now become reality, significantly impacting sectors like education and healthcare. “The progress in communication has been remarkable, and during the lockdown, technology ensured that education and essential services continued with minimal disruption,” Singh added.

The new VLF station will be located in the Damagudem forest area near Puduru in Vikarabad district. Earlier this year, the Indian Navy identified this site for the station, which is crucial for enabling communication with ships and submarines—a vital component of the Navy’s operational network. This development underscores India’s commitment to strengthening its maritime security and advancing its defence infrastructure.
