PM Modi Attends 16th BRICS Summit in Russia, Focuses on Multilateralism and Bilateral Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi began a two-day visit to Russia on Tuesday to participate in the 16th BRICS Summit, held in Kazan from October 22-24 under Russia’s chairmanship. The summit, themed “Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security,” brings together global leaders to address key international challenges and strengthen cooperation.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) emphasized that the summit offers an opportunity to evaluate the progress of ongoing BRICS initiatives and explore new avenues for collaboration. Key discussions will revolve around expanding economic cooperation, trade in national currencies, and sustainable development.

During the visit, PM Modi will hold bilateral meetings with fellow BRICS leaders, including a highly anticipated discussion with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This is PM Modi’s second visit to Russia in 2024, following his trip in July for the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit, during which he was awarded Russia’s highest civilian honor, the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle.

Indian Ambassador to Russia, Vinay Kumar, underscored India’s ongoing commitment to BRICS, noting the group’s vital role in global economic cooperation. Kumar pointed out that one of the summit’s key discussions will center on India’s LiFE mission (Lifestyle for Environment), which focuses on combating climate change through sustainable living practices. Other topics on the agenda include digital and financial inclusion.

Ambassador Kumar also highlighted the significance of the India-Russia bilateral relationship, particularly in the context of achieving the trade target of USD 100 billion by 2030, set during PM Modi’s earlier visit. He mentioned that both nations are actively engaged in discussions to finalize sector-specific trade plans, with the next India-Russia Intergovernmental Commission meeting scheduled for November.

Formed in 2006, the BRICS group, which originally comprised Brazil, Russia, India, and China, expanded to include South Africa in 2010. In 2024, the bloc further grew with the addition of five new members—Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE—reflecting its increasing global influence.

The BRICS Summit provides PM Modi with an important platform to engage in multilateral discussions while reinforcing India-Russia bilateral ties, further enhancing cooperation in areas such as trade, climate action, and economic inclusion.
