In a landmark verdict, a court handling the notorious 2021 doctor assault case in Udali, Hojai district, has convicted 12 individuals and sentenced them to up to 10 years of imprisonment. The judgment marks a significant milestone in delivering justice in a case that had sparked outrage across Assam.

The case stemmed from a shocking incident at the Udali COVID Care Center in central Assam, where a mob assaulted Dr. Seuj Senapati and other medical staff following the death of a COVID-19 patient. Dr. Senapati, who was severely beaten, had to be transferred to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for advanced treatment.

The Hojai police, led by Superintendent of Police Barun Purkayastha, had filed a 56-page charge sheet within 29 days of the incident, naming 36 accused, including three minors. The accused faced charges under several provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Disaster Management Act, the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act (PDPP), and the Assam Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage to Property) Act.

The trial meticulously examined evidence and witness testimonies, resulting in the conviction of 12 accused. Their sentencing underscores the state’s commitment to upholding the safety and dignity of healthcare professionals.

Assam Director General of Police (DGP) G.P. Singh expressed his satisfaction with the verdict, writing on X (formerly Twitter), “In the infamous Doctor Assault case of Udali – Hojai of 2021, the competent court has pronounced 12 accused persons guilty and awarded imprisonment up to 10 years. Compliments to the entire investigation and prosecution team.”

The judgment has been lauded for sending a clear message against violence toward healthcare workers, especially during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. It stands as a stern reminder of the need to respect those who serve on the frontlines and highlights the legal consequences of such heinous acts.
