Priyanka Gandhi Takes Oath as MP from Wayanad, Kerala, Marking Historic Moment for Gandhi Family

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra today took the oath of office in the Lok Sabha as the Member of Parliament (MP) from Wayanad, Kerala. Priyanka, who secured a resounding victory with over 4 lakh votes, outperformed her brother Rahul Gandhi’s performance in the 2019 elections.

With this win, all members of the Nehru-Gandhi family are now part of the Indian Parliament, making it a rare instance in parliamentary history where three family members hold seats in the House at the same time. Priyanka took the oath in Hindi, holding a copy of the Indian Constitution in her right hand, and wore a traditional Kerala saree, marking a significant moment in her political journey.

This victory makes Priyanka the 10th member of the Nehru-Gandhi family to serve in the Lok Sabha. Her husband, Robert Vadra, and their children were present at the ceremony to support her.

In a message shared on X (formerly Twitter) after her win, Priyanka expressed her gratitude to the people of Wayanad, saying, “I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the trust you have placed in me. I will make sure that over time, you truly feel this victory has been your victory and the person you chose to represent you understands your hopes and dreams and fights for you as one of your own. I look forward to being your voice in Parliament.”

Priyanka’s entry into Parliament follows her prominent role in Congress politics, particularly in Uttar Pradesh. She was appointed as the Congress general secretary for eastern Uttar Pradesh in 2019, later overseeing the entire state. Despite a disappointing performance in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, Priyanka has remained a key figure in shaping the party’s strategy for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Her political influence was also evident in Amethi, where Congress candidate Kishori Lal Sharma, a close associate of the Gandhi family, defeated BJP leader and former Union Minister Smriti Irani, an important victory for Congress.

Priyanka’s entry into the political sphere and her oath-taking as an MP from Wayanad has sparked various reactions. BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya commented on X, referring to her as the “New Muslim League MP from Wayanad,” a remark likely to fuel ongoing political debates.

As Priyanka begins her tenure in Parliament, her focus remains on representing the people of Wayanad and voicing their concerns in the legislative process, signaling her growing role in national politics.
