India Mourns the Loss of Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh

The Government of India has declared a seven-day state mourning from December 26, 2024, to January 1, 2025, following the passing of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh earlier today. Dr. Singh, aged 92, passed away at AIIMS Hospital in New Delhi. As a mark of respect, the National Flag will fly at half-mast across the country, and all official entertainment events have been suspended during this period.

Dr. Singh’s mortal remains were transported to his residence at 3 Motilal Nehru Marg, where a stream of dignitaries, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, arrived to pay their respects. Congress leader KC Venugopal announced that the late leader’s last rites would be held in New Delhi on Saturday, with detailed arrangements to be shared soon. His body will be placed for public homage before the funeral.

Dr. Manmohan Singh, a distinguished economist and statesman, served as India’s 13th Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014. He was widely revered for his integrity, intellect, and pivotal role in shaping India’s economic reforms. As Finance Minister in the early 1990s, he spearheaded transformative policies that liberalized India’s economy, laying the foundation for the nation’s growth in subsequent decades.

As Prime Minister, Dr. Singh focused on inclusive growth, education, health, and social welfare. Under his leadership, landmark initiatives such as the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) and the Right to Information Act were enacted, transforming governance and improving millions of lives.
