Karnataka to Set Up Research Centre to Honor Dr. Manmohan Singh’s Economic Reforms
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced plans to establish a research and study center at Bengaluru University dedicated to the groundbreaking economic reforms implemented by former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh during his tenure. Speaking to the media on Friday, Shivakumar paid tribute to Dr. Singh, recognizing his unparalleled contribution to India’s development.
“Destiny is not in our hands, but I am proud to say that though Manmohan Singh is no more, he is still alive. His contribution to the nation can’t be changed,” Shivakumar said. “In Bengaluru University, we are going to start a research and study centre for all students to learn about the reforms he had created for the growth of the country.”
The announcement comes in the wake of the passing of Dr. Singh, who passed away at the age of 92 on December 26, 2024, at AIIMS Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with other political leaders, expressed their grief over his death, recognizing his monumental influence on India’s economic policies.
Former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda also hailed Dr. Singh as a “great leader” and acknowledged his significant impact on India’s political and economic landscape. Additionally, KM Chandrasekhar, the former Cabinet Secretary under Dr. Singh’s government, shared his personal memories of working with the late leader.
As a mark of respect, the Government of India declared a seven-day state mourning from December 26, 2024, to January 1, 2025. During this period, the National Flag will be flown at half-mast at all customary locations, and official entertainment events will remain suspended.
Dr. Singh, widely credited with steering India’s economic liberalization in the 1990s, continues to be celebrated for his vision and leadership.
