Bangladesh Summons Indian High Commissioner Over Border Tensions

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma on Sunday amid escalating tensions over alleged border fence construction by India.

The meeting, held at 3:00 pm, lasted 45 minutes and involved discussions between Verma and Bangladesh’s Foreign Secretary, Jashim Uddin. Bangladesh accused India of attempting to construct fences at five border locations, claiming it violated existing bilateral agreements.

While no official statement was released after the meeting, sources confirmed the summons was a direct response to the allegations.

This development follows Bangladesh’s decision to skip an Indian-hosted event celebrating the 150th anniversary of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) earlier this week. Bangladesh cited “restrictions on non-essential foreign travel at government expense” as the reason for its absence.

The diplomatic engagements signal potential strain in Indo-Bangladeshi relations, with both sides yet to make further clarifications on the border dispute.
