The year’s first floods struck Assam’s Dibrugarh district on Wednesday, affecting over 3,000 people, including 1,000 children.
Chief executive officer of Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) GD Tripathi told TNL that the first incidence of floods was reported from the Chabua revenue circle in Dibrugarh district.
“As of now, we do not have any alert for high flooding but we do have rainfall alert. All emergency services in the state have been kept on the highest level of alertness,” Tripathi said.(TNL)
The disaster management authority has declared Dibrugarh as affected by floods. The situation report stated that a population of 3,857 in the Chabua revenue circle have been hit and among them are 1,050 children.(TNL)
An anganwadi centre and an elementary school in the revenue circle have been submerged. Besides, erosion has also been reported from the Gereki area.
The Central Water Commission reported that at 6pm, the Brahmaputra was flowing above the warning level at Neematighat in Jorhat district. Another river, Jiabharali in Sonitpur district, was also flowing above the warning level. The Brahmaputra and the Barak are the two major river systems of the state and the rivers are liable to floods, mainly because they receive heavy rainfall within a short time.(TNL)
The Met department, in its forecast for the next 24 hours, has stated that moderate rain is very likely to occur at most places over Arunachal Pradesh, at many places over Assam and Meghalaya and light rain is very likely to occur at isolated places over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.(TNL)
