Assam Rifles Commemorate Their 188th Raising Day
Guwahati: The Assam Rifles, the nation’s oldest and most illustrious Paramilitary Unit, is commemorating its 188th Raising Day on Friday at its Laitkor Garrison in Meghalaya’s capital Shillong.
The force was established on March 24, 1835, and since then, it has rendered heroic service to the country and made a significant contribution to establishing peace in the northeastern states.
Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Development for the North East Area, G. Kishan Reddy, attended this year’s Raising Day ceremony as the principal guest.
The Minister paid tribute to the gallant members of the force who over the course of 188 years had sacrificed the ultimate sacrifice while doing their duties at the War Memorial in Shillong along with Lt Gen P C Nair, DG Assam Rifles, and all ranks of the force.
The minister addressed the whole force and thanked each rank for their excellent efforts in putting down insurgencies in Kashmir and the North-east in a separate special sainik sammelan.
The force has continued to demonstrate its mettle throughout operations in 2022–2023. Five battalions received the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Unit Citation during this time, and three battalions won the Chief of the Army Staff Unit Commendation.
Moreover, the force’s personnel received a Shaurya Chakra, seven Sena Medals, 411 Presidential and Governors Medals, and one Shaurya Chakra.
Former DGs of the force were also present, creating an unforgettable opportunity for them to meet with members of all ranks and impart their invaluable knowledge.
The Assam Rifles maintain their great reputation among Northeasterners with each passing year.
The force continues to give the inhabitants a sense of security as the area progresses towards development and wealth.
The Assam Rifles Raising Day is not a singular event; rather, it is a joint celebration of all Northeasterners, reinforcing the Assam Rifles’ slogan of “Friends of the North East.”
The Assam Rifles continue to develop in order to confront new difficulties, live up to its motto, and fulfil their mission as the “Sentinels of the Northeast” as the government focuses more attention on the Act East Strategy.
