India overtakes Australia to become world’s top test team

Good news: The Indian Test team has risen to the top of the international rankings ahead of the 2023 international Test Championship final.

The Indian Test team has supplanted the Australian Test team as the best in the world. India surpassed Australia in the most recent rankings provided by the International Cricket Council (ICC), while Pat Cummins’ team slid to second place with 116 rating points. Australia’s dominance in the Men’s Test rankings came to an end after 15 months.

Sharing the big news, the ICC tweeted on Tuesday, “India dethrone Australia in the annual update of the @MRFWorldwide ICC Men’s Test Rankings ahead of the #WTC23 Final.”

Australia has been the top-ranked Test team since January 2022. Australia will face India in the ICC World Test Championship 2023 final at The Oval on June 7. With a 4-0 series victory over England, they surpassed New Zealand and took over the top spot. The difference between England and the second-placed team has decreased from 13 to two rating points as a result of recent steady play and the weighting of their 4-0 Ashes loss and 1-0 West Indies loss. England is still in third place.

The annual rankings take into account all series finished since May 2020, with series finished before May 2022 weighted at 50% and all series finished after that weighted at 100%.

Meanwhile, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary has congratulated team India for this feat.

Taking to Twitter, he wrote, “Congratulations to #TeamIndia for becoming the No. 1 Test team in the world. The top spot reflects India’s commitment to Test cricket and the consistent performances both home and away. India are also the No. 1 T20I side.”
