Guwahati: The body of a woman stored in the mortuary at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) missing on Wednesday.

Sources claim that the incident took place due to the negligence of the authorities.

The body was of a woman identified as Lakhimi Chettri, a resident of Amsing in Jorabat.

Lakhimi’s body was brought for a post-mortem on May 1. The body was then stored for 4 days. However, Laksmi’s body went missing today.

According to sources, there was a mix-up that caused the body of Lakhimi to be mistaken for another body and taken away, while the body of the other woman was given to Lakhimi’s relatives.

Hysteria gripped the family members after seeing someone else’s corpse in place of Lakhimi.

An investigation into the matter is underway.
