Assam: Cough syrup bottles worth Rs 2 crore seized, 2 Arrested

Guwahati: In a major blow to inter-state drug cartels, a huge consignment of Phensedyl cough syrup bottles was caught in Karimganj district of Assam on Sunday night.

This was informed by officials.

Based on specific input, Churaibari Police in Karimganj conducted an operation during which cough syrup bottles worth around Rs 2 crores was seized.

The operation was carried out along the Assam – Tripura state border, mentioned officials.

During the operation, a freight truck bearing registration numbers UP 21 BN 1404 was intercepted by the police at a check point.

Upon searching, officials found and seized a massive consignment of substandard cough syrup bottles that were being transported illegally.

35,300 bottles of cough syrup were seized, according to the authorities.

According to them, the truck was coming from Bihar and was going to Agartala in Tripura.

Based on specific information about a potential smuggling attempt by recently appointed officer Pranab Mili, the operation was carried out.

Two people have been taken into custody in relation to the matter.

They were identified as Mayank Sharma, the driver of the truck and Bishal, co-pilot.

According to officials, they are residents of Harthala village in the Moradabad district of Uttar Pradesh.
