Ro-Pax Ferries Helmsmen Withdraw Protest in Assam’s Jorhat
Guwahati: The Ro-Pax ferry helmsmen in Assam’s Jorhat district who were protesting the lack of salaries abandoned their protest after senior officials informed them that salaries would be provided, reports emerged on Sunday.
At least to 17 helmsmen declared to stage a protest after being paid nothing over the previous four months.
Senior representatives of the Ro-Pax ferry services gathered at Nimati ghat to speak with the protesting helmsman after hearing about their protest over the loss of their salary on media channels.
Following their interaction, the officials reassured them that they would shortly release their pay. The helmsmen agreed to resume their routine activities after receiving this assurance and decided to end their protest.
Beginning on May 15, the Ro-Pax ferry services between Nimati ghat and Majuli will resume their regular operations. The Department of Inland Water Transport has already started accepting online reservations for tickets.
It should be noted that in 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a number of infrastructure projects in Assam, including the Ro-Pax vessel operations between Nimatighat-Majuli Island, North Guwahati-South Guwahati, and Dhubri-Hatsingimari. This was done to improve connectivity and water transportation in the state.
