Nearly 21,000 people in four districts in Assam have been affected in the first spell of flood, informed Assam Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on Wednesday.
20,768 people, including 2448 children were reportedly affected in the Lakhimpur district, it said.
According to the ASDMA, the Singra River burst two embankments on Wednesday in the Lakhimpur district, adding to a total of five embankments and six roadways that had been damaged by the constant rain.
“Following incessant rain, the water level of many rivers is rising up,” it said.
The four affected districts are Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Cachar and Kamrup (Metro).
19 villages under five revenue circles are currently under water, and the flood has an impact on 1787 animals as well.
13.50 hectares of crop land have been flooded in the flood-affected districts, according to ASDMA.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had previously had a video conference with the DCs and other top officers of the state administration to put all essential measures in place and ramp up flood preparedness and response mechanism before to the arrival of the monsoon.
He said, “With the monsoon setting in, in the state, all the government departments including NHAI, NHIDC, NDRF and SDRF should become alert to negotiate with the flood and reach out to the affected people.”
Furthermore, he asked that ASDMA turn on risk communication and early warning systems to inform people of the potential dangers posed by the flood.
