Assam: Embankment Breach Poses Threat to Residents Of Barpeta
Guwahati: The population of Assam’s Barpeta district are plagued by a serious threat as a result of the frightening rate at which various rivers’ water levels are rising. Many regions of lower Assam have been submerged due to the rise in water levels in different rivers.
A newly built embankment on the Harijan rivulet that connects Moranadi river and Nakhanda river has already started to breach. The freshly constructed embankment is currently experiencing soil erosion as a result of the persistent rain. The people who live nearby are frightened about the impending flood.
“Our major concern is that if the embankment breaches, we’ll have nowhere to go,” said a resident near Harijan.
Moreover, the contractor responsible for building the embankment is accused of doing poor work. “Even rollers weren’t properly used while building the embankment”, said a local resident.
The local administration is urged by the people to take the required action to stop the erosion of the embankment.
