Congress Mounts Strategic Campaign in Northeastern Assam Ahead of Elections

The Congress party is gearing up to bolster its electoral prospects in northeastern Assam, with party chief Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Priyanka Gandhi scheduled to lead crucial campaign efforts in key constituencies.

On April 27, Mallikarjun Kharge will kick off the campaign with a press conference in Guwahati, followed by a public meeting in Barpeta, where Congress nominee Mira Borthakur Goswami will face BJP’s Bijuli Kalita Medhi.

The Barpeta seat has witnessed controversy after the Congress nominated Deep Gayan, causing discord with ally CPI-M. Despite tensions, the Congress is steadfast in its candidacy, setting the stage for a triangular contest against AGP leader Phani Bhushan Chowdhury.

In Dhubri, another significant constituency, the Congress has fielded Rakibul Hussain against former ally AIUDF leader Badruddin Ajmal, intensifying the electoral battle in this Muslim-majority area.

Reflecting on past elections, the Congress seeks to improve its performance, having secured only three out of 14 Lok Sabha seats in the state during the 2019 national polls. With a strategic focus on key constituencies and concerted campaign efforts, the party aims to consolidate its presence and broaden its electoral footprint.

Recent campaign rallies featuring Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi in Jorhat and Dibrugarh underscore the party’s commitment to grassroots engagement. In Jorhat, Congress leader Gaurab Gogoi is contesting against BJP’s Topon Gogoi, while the Dibrugarh seat has been entrusted to ally Assam Jatiya Parishad, with leader Lurinjyoti Gogoi facing BJP’s Sarbananda Sonowal and AAP’s Manoj Dhanowar.

As the electoral landscape unfolds, the Congress demonstrates resilience and strategic acumen, harnessing key alliances and leveraging leadership presence to navigate the intricacies of northeastern Assam’s electoral dynamics.
