Assam: India’s Longest River Bridge in Dhubri Takes Center Stage in Politics

Spanning the Brahmaputra River to link Dhubri in Assam with Phulwari in Meghalaya, the 20-kilometer bridge, slated for completion by 2027, has emerged as a pivotal issue in the triangular contest involving the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), the Assam Gana Parishad (AGP), and the Congress party. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for this transformative infrastructure project in 2021, heralding a new era of connectivity and economic development between the two states.

Local enthusiasm for the bridge is palpable, with residents eagerly anticipating the convenience and efficiency it will bring to their lives. Currently reliant on boat transportation across the Brahmaputra, locals face arduous journeys, often lasting three to four hours and prone to disruptions during the monsoon season.

“The bridge will revolutionize travel and trade between Assam and Meghalaya,” remarked one resident. “It will not only save time but also boost business opportunities for us.” Another resident emphasized the safety and convenience benefits, stating, “Travelling by boat is risky, especially during rough weather. The bridge will ensure safer and more reliable transportation for everyone.”

In the political arena, the significance of the bridge is evident, with each party endeavoring to claim credit for its development. Javed Islam of the AGP, aligned with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), lauded the government’s initiative, while Badruddin Ajmal of the AIUDF highlighted his role in advocating for the project. The Congress party, too, has emphasized its contributions, recognizing the bridge’s potential to drive socio-economic growth in the region.
