State Disaster Management Department Enhances Preparedness for Impending Monsoon Season

Representatives from key sectors, including Health, Public Works, Public Health Engineering, State Disaster Response Force, India Meteorological Department, Education, and Civil Defence, collaborated to discuss strategies for seamless coordination during calamities.

Sanjay Goyal, the Commissioner and Secretary for Disaster Management, emphasized the pivotal role of district administrators in leading relief efforts. He stressed the importance of conducting comprehensive vulnerability assessments and updating district-level disaster management plans, directing Deputy Commissioners to spearhead these initiatives.

Efficient communication during emergencies was identified as paramount, with district authorities advised to closely collaborate with the MPRO to maintain robust communication channels.

To expedite relief operations, each Deputy Commissioner has been allocated a substantial sum of Rs 20 crore. Goyal highlighted the administration’s commitment to swift financial aid disbursement, ensuring beneficiaries receive assistance within 48 hours of recent cyclonic storms.

Regular updates from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) are expected to enhance the Disaster Management Department’s ability to anticipate and mitigate potential risks during the monsoon season.

Despite ongoing challenges, including recent natural calamities causing damage to approximately 2,800 houses, Goyal reassured prompt financial relief reaching affected beneficiaries within 48 hours of assessment.

In Shillong, a comprehensive risk assessment initiative is underway to minimize the potential impact on lives and property during the impending monsoon season. This proactive approach underscores the department’s dedication to safeguarding communities and mitigating the impact of natural disasters.
