Nagaland Government Implements Stringent Stray Dog Management Measures in Phek Town

Responding to growing concerns over public safety, the Nagaland Government has introduced rigorous measures to address the issue of stray dogs in Phek town, prompted by a surge in reported dog bite incidents and fears of potential rabies transmission.

Under the directive issued by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Phek, on May 10, 2024 (order number NO.DCP/DEV/MED/2023/39), stringent actions have been outlined to mitigate the risks associated with stray dogs. Additional Deputy Commissioner Ruopfukuotuo Noudi, NCS, has underscored the imperative for dog owners to ensure the vaccination of their pets against rabies.

The order mandates the compulsory leashing of all dogs in public spaces to curb straying and minimize the threat posed to the community. Furthermore, it stipulates that any uncontrolled dogs found within the town’s limits may be seized or, in severe cases, subject to immediate action, including euthanasia by the competent authority.

These measures underscore the government’s commitment to safeguarding public health and instilling a sense of security among residents of Phek town. By promoting responsible pet ownership and proactive measures to prevent rabies outbreaks, the initiative aims to create a safer environment for all inhabitants.
