Assam Mourns the Passing of Former Minister Thaneswar Boro at 86

Guwahati, Assam – Thaneswar Boro, a prominent figure in Assam’s political arena and former President of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), breathed his last on May 17 at 7:05 am at the age of 86. The former Assam Cabinet Minister, known for his contributions to education and revenue sectors, succumbed to a severe heart condition at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where he had been undergoing treatment.

Boro’s health had been deteriorating, leading to his admission to Rangia Hospital on May 9. Subsequently, he was shifted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of Swasti Hospital and later to GMCH as his condition worsened.

The news of Boro’s demise has plunged the state into mourning, with numerous political parties and organizations expected to pay their last respects as his mortal remains are transported from Guwahati to Rangia.

A stalwart in Assam’s political landscape, Boro founded the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) in 2016 and continued to be a revered leader despite facing health challenges. Last year, the Assam administration had assured to cover his medical expenses during a previous hospitalization, a testament to his service to the state. In July 2023, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma dispatched Cabinet Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah to monitor Boro’s health condition closely and provide updates.

Boro’s demise marks the end of an era in Assam’s political realm, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering dedication and selfless public service.
