Assam CM Sarma Unveils Comprehensive Reforms to Modernize Police Force

In a significant announcement on May 25, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma unveiled a comprehensive set of reforms designed to revitalize and modernize the state’s police force. Recognizing the pivotal role of the Battalions within the policing ecosystem, Sarma emphasized the need for enhanced infrastructure, improved housing, and better career prospects for police personnel.

Taking to the microblogging platform X, Chief Minister Sarma reiterated the government’s commitment to modernizing the Battalions, stating, “Our Battalions are at the core of our policing ecosystem, and modernizing them is a key focus area of our Government. Apart from enhanced budgetary support and amenities, better housing and assured promotional avenues have also been implemented.”

Outlined reforms encompass various critical areas:

  1. Increased Budgetary Allocation and Facilities: The reforms prioritize increased funding and upgraded facilities to effectively modernize the police Battalions, ensuring they are adequately equipped to tackle evolving challenges.
  2. Administrative and Functional Streamlining: The initiative includes the creation of additional posts and the incorporation of 100 non-gazetted positions to optimize operational efficiency and administrative effectiveness within the force.
  3. Housing Development: Addressing housing deficiencies, the government plans to construct 10,000 new 2 BHK houses in the fiscal year 2024-25, along with an additional 2,000 houses in the current financial year. These endeavors aim to provide improved living conditions for police personnel, fostering a conducive environment for their well-being.
  4. Welfare Enhancement: The reforms introduce augmented ration benefits and ensure three rank promotions, aiming to bolster the overall welfare and career advancement prospects of police personnel, thus enhancing their morale and dedication to duty.

These sweeping reforms underscore the government’s commitment to revitalizing and elevating the Battalions, ultimately fortifying the operational capabilities and welfare framework of Assam’s policing apparatus.
