Meghalaya Authorities Take Preemptive Action, Shutting Schools Ahead of Cyclone ‘Remal’
As Cyclone ‘Remal’ looms closer, the Meghalaya government has taken proactive measures to ensure the safety of its citizens, particularly schoolchildren, by announcing the closure of schools in districts expected to bear the brunt of the impending storm. This preemptive action aims to mitigate potential risks posed by the severe weather conditions forecasted for Tuesday.
The State Disaster Management Authority has issued a stern advisory, warning residents about the likelihood of extreme weather events, including heavy rainfall and squally winds with speeds reaching 40-50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph. These adverse conditions are anticipated to affect isolated areas across several districts, including East Jaintia, East Khasi, South West Khasi, West Jaintia, and West Khasi hills, within the next 24 hours.
“To preempt any unforeseen incidents, all schools within East Khasi Hills District will remain closed on May 28,” emphasized the directive issued by the deputy commissioner.
The decision to suspend educational activities underscores the government’s commitment to prioritizing the safety and well-being of the community. By temporarily halting school operations, authorities aim to minimize potential risks and disruptions stemming from the impending cyclonic conditions. This measure reflects a proactive approach to safeguarding the lives of students and educational staff alike.
