Hydropower Project Water Releases Trigger Severe Flooding in West Karbi Anglong District

WEST KARBI ANGLONG, ASSAM – The region of West Karbi Anglong district is grappling with severe flooding following the release of water through multiple gates of the Karbilangpi and Khandang Hydropower Projects. The inundation, exacerbated by recent cyclonic activity and incessant rainfall, has led to the overflowing of the Kopili and Borpani rivers, inundating vast swathes of land.

The Ramani field, situated along the Borpani river, has borne the brunt of the flooding, with water engulfing the area. Villages such as Juripar and Shimluguri have been severely affected, with floodwaters breaching homes and causing extensive damage to property and possessions.

The deluge has also wrought havoc on transportation networks, rendering roads impassable and disrupting the flow of traffic in the affected regions. As a result, many residents have been compelled to evacuate their residences, seeking refuge in safer locales while leaving behind their belongings.
