Sikkim CM Prem Singh Tamang Inaugurates ‘HILL WALKATHON’ on International Everest Day

GANGTOK, SIKKIM – In a symbolic gesture marking the 17th International Everest Day 2024, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang ceremoniously flagged off the ‘HILL WALKATHON’ event organized by the Denzong Sherpa Association in collaboration with the state Tourism Department. This event, held on the morning of May 29, pays tribute to the historic achievement of Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, who successfully conquered Mount Everest on May 29, 1953.

International Everest Day, established globally in 2008 following Sir Edmund Hillary’s demise, celebrates the spirit of mountaineering and adventure. It serves as a poignant reminder of the triumph of human endeavor over formidable challenges.

The day’s festivities extend beyond the ‘HILL WALKATHON,’ with a themed program scheduled at Chintan Bhawan. Here, distinguished mountaineers will be honored with awards and certificates, recognizing their remarkable contributions to the field of mountaineering. The event aims to inspire the next generation of adventurers and instill a sense of pride in Sikkim’s rich mountaineering heritage.
