Teesta River Overflows as Disaster Management Authority Issues Warning

In response to the relentless heavy rainfall, the Teesta River has surged, prompting the Disaster Management Authority to issue a warning as a precautionary measure. Vigilance has been heightened among concerned officers, including BDOs, MEOs, and SHOs, who have been instructed to monitor the rising water levels closely.

Residents residing near the Teesta basin and low-lying areas downstream have been advised to evacuate as a preventive measure against potential incidents. Despite the warning being issued last night, locals have reported that the Teesta River appeared to be flowing at a normal volume by morning. This incident is particularly noteworthy given recent concerns regarding Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in the region.

Reports from Sangkalang OP have indicated that the Mantam Bridge linking Upper Dzongu Tingvong Busty was swept away due to the elevated water level of the Kanaka River.

On October 4, 2024, the Teesta River reached an unprecedented high following heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms that battered parts of the state. This led to extensive destruction as landslides and flooding gripped the region. Approximately 25 army vehicles, sections of the ATTC college, and several army personnel were reportedly swept away in the disaster.
