Joint Inspection Assesses Flood and Mudflow Damage in Thek Village, Sikkim

In response to recent heavy rainfall and subsequent mudflows impacting Thek village in Sikkim, a collaborative joint inspection was conducted on June 13. The assessment focused on the Domphen Selele areas, aiming to evaluate the extent of damage, determine causal factors, and strategize preventive measures against future occurrences.

Led by a diverse team comprising forest officials, representatives from the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Panchayat members, and delegates from Nalanda and ND Enterprise, the inspection aimed to amalgamate expertise and local insights. Key objectives included assessing infrastructure damage, understanding environmental vulnerabilities, and engaging with affected residents to gauge community needs.

The inspection highlighted significant challenges posed by the heavy rainfall, which led to rising water levels and subsequent inundation of facilities like the Melli Stadium. Road connectivity in North Sikkim has been severely disrupted, necessitating urgent measures to restore access and facilitate relief efforts.

Stakeholders, including the Range Officer of Barapathing, the District Project Officer of DDMA, and representatives from Nalanda and ND Enterprise, collaborated closely with local residents to develop immediate relief strategies and devise long-term mitigation plans. This collaborative approach underscores a commitment to bolstering community resilience and enhancing disaster preparedness in vulnerable areas of Sikkim.

Moving forward, the forest department will draft a comprehensive action plan encompassing short-term relief initiatives and sustainable measures to mitigate future risks. The concerted efforts aim to restore normalcy swiftly while prioritizing the safety and well-being of residents affected by the recent natural calamity in Thek village and surrounding areas of Sikkim.
