CPIM Alleges BJP Attacks, Requests Voter List Extension Ahead of Tripura Panchayat Polls

Jitendra Chaudhury, Secretary of the CPIM Tripura Committee and Opposition Leader, has formally petitioned State Election Commissioner Saradindu Chaudhury, alleging widespread attacks on CPIM supporters by BJP backers across the state. In a detailed letter, Chaudhury documented incidents of vandalism at CPIM offices, physical assaults on activists, and targeted attacks on opposition supporters’ residences, escalating since the Lok Sabha election outcomes.

Highlighting specific instances in Boxanagar and Salema, where CPIM representatives were reportedly assaulted, Chaudhury underscored the resulting closure of several block offices due to safety concerns from alleged threats by BJP miscreants.

In response to the escalating tensions, CPIM has urgently called for a 10-day extension beyond the current deadline for the submission of claims and objections regarding the voter list for the impending three-tier Panchayat polls. The party emphasized the need for adequate time to thoroughly scrutinize the voter list, ensuring accurate segregation at both Panchayat and Ward levels.

The Tripura State Election Commission has already initiated preparations for the upcoming polls, scheduled to conclude by the first week of August. Presently, 2,650 polling stations have been identified across 35 blocks, with the draft voter list encompassing 1,295,086 registered voters. The period for claims and objections on the draft list is set to continue until July 24, followed by its finalization.
