Manipur Government Suspends Three Doctors Over Absence During Jiribam District Crisis

In response to the worsening situation in Jiribam, Manipur, where violence has led to a surge in internally displaced persons (IDPs), the state government has taken disciplinary action against three senior doctors for their failure to report to duty at the district hospital.

Effective June 13, Dr. Oinam Bisu Singh, Dr. Laishram Oken Singh, and Dr. Feiga Luckson Gangmei have been suspended pending further disciplinary proceedings. This decision comes after the doctors allegedly disregarded government directives to fulfill their duties at the Jiribam district hospital amidst the escalating humanitarian crisis.

The suspension order, issued by the joint secretary of the Manipur Health and Family Welfare Department, invokes Rule 10 of the Central Civil Services Rules, 1965, which mandates doctors to remain stationed at their designated headquarters in Imphal unless authorized otherwise.

The unrest in Jiribam, which began on June 6 and resulted in the destruction of around 100 houses, has forcibly displaced approximately 1,000 residents, including vulnerable groups such as women and children. The district hospital now faces heightened pressure to provide urgent medical assistance to the displaced population.

The government’s action underscores its commitment to maintaining essential medical services amidst the ongoing crisis in Jiribam, ensuring accountability in delivering crucial healthcare during this challenging period.
