Assam Floods: Over 161,000 Affected, Death Toll Reaches 26 Amid Rising Waters


The flood situation in Assam has reached critical levels, impacting 161,209 individuals across the state, with the death toll climbing to 26, according to reports from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). Continuous heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours has led to the inundation of 470 villages spread across 15 districts.

Among the worst-hit districts are Karimganj, where 152,133 people are affected, followed by Nagaon with 5,247, Kokrajhar with 900, Biswanath with 818, and Nalbari with 676 individuals affected. The Kopili River in Kampur, Nagaon district, has surged above the danger mark, exacerbating the flood situation in its vicinity.

Currently, relief efforts are underway with 5,114 individuals taking shelter in 27 relief camps in Karimganj. Additionally, 17,935 non-camp residents are receiving assistance through relief distribution centers in Hailakandi and Karimganj districts. The floods have also impacted 93,895 animals, highlighting the widespread devastation.

Infrastructure damage is extensive, with reports of eight road damage incidents across Biswanath, Darrang, Lakhimpur, Tamulpur, and Udalguri districts. Furthermore, embankment breaches have been reported in Lakhimpur and embankment damage in Biswanath.

Urban areas like Kamrup, Kamrup (Metro), and Kokrajhar districts are experiencing flooding, affecting 532 people in Kokrajhar alone. Parts of North Guwahati and several areas within Guwahati city, including Bamunimaidam, Chandmari, Anuradha, and Gandhi Basti, have reported waterlogging due to heavy rainfall on June 18, 2024. Dispur, the capital’s administrative hub, has also been affected, with waterlogging in Sijubari, Hatigaon, and Kahilipara, while Azara experienced waterlogging in Natun Basti and Daharapur Chowk.

With the flood situation deteriorating, authorities are ramping up relief operations to provide essential aid and shelter to those affected by the calamity, aiming to mitigate the suffering caused by the rising waters across Assam.
