Bajali District Launches Vigorous Campaign to Combat Rising Snake Bite Incidents
Amidst a notable increase in snake bite incidents, authorities in Bajali district have initiated a robust campaign aimed at educating the community and healthcare providers about preventive measures and effective treatment strategies. The move follows the tragic death of Joa, a former educator in Bajali, who succumbed to a snake bite.
Prompted by this unfortunate incident, the district’s leadership has intensified efforts to raise awareness about the dangers posed by venomous snakes. The district president urged the district commissioner to escalate awareness initiatives, prompting collaboration with Shaheed Rauta Madan Civil Hospital to host a dedicated awareness session.
During the session, experts emphasized the serious threat posed by various snake species, particularly highlighting the swift and deadly nature of bites from highly venomous snakes like the King Cobra. They also cautioned against underestimating bites from seemingly harmless water snakes, stressing that immediate medical intervention is crucial to prevent fatalities. Despite the risks, experts reassured the public that prompt medical care significantly enhances survival chances, even for bites from lethal species such as the Guala snake (Banded krait).
Recent data underscored the severity of the issue in Assam, with 100 snake bite-related deaths reported in 2022, 37 in 2023, and seven fatalities recorded thus far in 2024.
Officials emphasized that effective treatment can often be provided at local rural hospitals without the need for intensive care facilities, reassuring communities about their preparedness.
To further bolster awareness, a seminar convened at Pathshala’s Harimandir premises, jointly organized by the Pathshala Government Health Centre and the Pathshala Market Committee, focused on educating attendees on immediate response measures following a snake bite.
In addition, a specialized training session led by Dr. Surjit Giri from Sivasagar Dimou Hospital equipped healthcare professionals from the Pathshala Government Health Centre with essential skills and protocols for managing snake bites effectively.
Under the guidance of Bajali District Commissioner Mridul Kumar Das, these comprehensive efforts aim to mitigate the threat posed by snake bites through enhanced awareness and proactive community preparedness measures across the district.
