Assam Floods: Over 1 Lakh Affected, Relief Efforts in Full Swing

Amidst ongoing monsoon havoc, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has declared a state of emergency as the Kushiyara river in Karimganj breaches its danger mark, triggering widespread flooding across the state. As of June 23, 2024, the calamity has impacted over 1 lakh residents in 10 districts, 27 revenue circles, and 968 villages.

Chief Minister Sarma confirmed that relief operations are actively underway, with 134 relief camps set up to shelter 17,661 affected individuals. Additionally, 94 relief distribution centers are operational, providing essential supplies to those displaced by the floods.

Despite a slight reduction in rainfall in certain regions, more than 3.90 lakh people continue to endure the adverse effects of inundation across Assam. The situation remains critical, with 19 districts grappling with flood-related challenges, compounded by landslides and storms that have resulted in 37 fatalities, with one person still reported missing.

In response to the escalating crisis, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to chair a high-level meeting on June 23 to assess the nation’s preparedness for managing floods during the upcoming monsoon season. This meeting aims to strategize and bolster flood management frameworks nationwide, highlighting the government’s proactive stance in mitigating the impact of seasonal disasters across India.
