Tata Group to Establish Major Semiconductor Plant in Assam Following Land Handover

In a significant move towards boosting India’s semiconductor industry, the Assam government has handed over a land site in Morigaon to the Tata Group, setting the stage for the construction of a large-scale semiconductor plant. This milestone was marked by the formal lease agreement for Tata Group’s semiconductor project in Jagiroad, Morigaon district.

The agreement, finalized at the Sub-Registrar’s office in Morigaon, grants Tata Group 517.27 bighas of land for a period of 60 years. Representing Tata Group, Board Member and Chief Human Resources Officer Ranjan Bandopadhyay and AIDC’s Manager (Tech) and Project in charge Dhiraj Pegu signed the lease. The event was attended by District Commissioner Devasish Sharma and Sub-Registrar Namrata Chahu.

District Commissioner Devasish Sharma emphasized the importance of this development, stating, “Today is a historic day for Morigaon district, for Assam, and for the entire country. The land registration for the semiconductor plant has been completed, fulfilling promises made by our Chief Minister.”

Key figures present at the ceremony included Assistant Vice President of Tata Electronics Pvt Ltd Kaninika Thakur, Executive Amoolya Huilgal, Legal Executive Nidhiya Jayaraman, HR Col Vikas Bhomia, and Project Team members Ashish Mishra and Avinash Dhabade.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone for the semiconductor and testing center in Jagiroad on March 13, marking a technological leap for Assam. The project, with an investment of Rs 27,000 crore, aims to produce 48 million chips daily and create direct employment for 16,000 individuals. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was also present at the foundation stone laying ceremony.

Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT) will develop the unit in Morigaon, addressing segments like automotive, electric vehicles, consumer electronics, telecom, and mobile phones. The plant, along with another in Gujarat, is expected to commence commercial production by 2026.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted that the northeast region, often overlooked in previous industrial revolutions, is now part of the technological revolution under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership. Tata Group’s project aims to mitigate chip shortages experienced during the Covid-19 pandemic and enhance indigenous manufacturing for national security and innovation.
