East Khasi Hills Police Crack Down on Pressure Groups Conducting Unauthorized Document Checks

Shillong, July 18, 2024 — Superintendent of Police (SP) Sylvester Nongtnger of East Khasi Hills district has initiated legal action by filing six First Information Reports (FIRs) against pressure groups conducting unauthorized document checks across various locations in the district. These actions are being pursued under Section 35(3) of the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation.

Confirming the developments, SP Nongtnger stated, “Six FIRs have been registered in East Khasi Hills district, and notices have been issued accordingly.” He emphasized the police’s commitment to ensuring law and order, noting that while no arrests have been made yet, investigations are ongoing.

The crackdown follows concerns raised over unauthorized checks by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) targeting migrant workers. SP Nongtnger reiterated the police’s vigilance in preventing any incidents that could escalate tensions or threaten public safety. He assured that the police are actively investigating reported assaults and other unlawful activities associated with these checks.

The situation underscores ongoing tensions in the district, prompting heightened police scrutiny to maintain community harmony and protect the rights of all residents affected by these actions.
