Assam Bypolls Set for September, Retain Pre-Delimitation Boundaries

Guwahati, July 19, 2024 — The Election Commission has announced that bypolls for five assembly constituencies in Assam, vacated following the Lok Sabha elections, will be conducted in September as per pre-delimitation boundaries.

The Lok Sabha elections, held between April 19 and June 1, led to vacancies in the Samaguri, Behali, Dholai, Sidli, and Bongaigaon constituencies after their representatives were elected to the Lok Sabha. The Samaguri seat was previously held by the Congress, while the remaining seats were under the BJP and its allies, AGP and BPF.

Historically, bypolls in Assam have seen varied timelines. The 2019 Lok Sabha elections, held in April and May, led to bypolls in September, with results declared in October. This year, the gap is shorter, with bypolls scheduled just three months after the Lok Sabha results.

The upcoming bypolls will adhere to the pre-delimitation boundaries. The Election Commission released its final delimitation report on August 11, revising the nomenclature of 19 assembly constituencies and one parliamentary constituency. However, these changes will not affect the September bypolls.
