Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi Criticizes BJP Over Communal Politics and CAA Focus
Lucknow, July 20, 2024 — Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has taken a strong stance against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing the party of engaging in communal politics following its setbacks in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Gogoi’s comments came in response to recent controversies involving the installation of nameplates on eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route in Uttar Pradesh and the BJP’s emphasis on the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Assam.
Gogoi criticized Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s directive to install nameplates for food shop proprietors along the Kanwar Yatra route. The measure, intended to uphold the religious sentiments of Kanwar pilgrims, has been seen by critics as a move to stir communal sentiments. Gogoi remarked, “The BJP’s actions reflect a troubling return to communal politics. The people of India have clearly rejected such divisive tactics.”
Further, Gogoi expressed concern over the BJP’s focus on the CAA, alleging that it detracts from more pressing local issues in Assam. He highlighted that many residents lack Aadhaar cards, which hinders their access to essential ration supplies. Gogoi also noted that numerous Bengali Hindus were excluded from the National Register of Citizens (NRC) list, raising concerns about their citizenship status.
“In Assam, the lack of Aadhaar cards is preventing people from obtaining necessary rations,” Gogoi said. “Despite this, the BJP is fixated on implementing the CAA, which has only seen minimal applications. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s comments about the limited number of citizenship applications under the CAA are concerning. The BJP’s focus on this issue, rather than addressing local grievances, is misplaced.”
Gogoi’s remarks underscore the ongoing political tension and criticism directed at the BJP, reflecting broader concerns about the party’s policy priorities and their impact on regional issues.
