Investigation Underway After Stray Dog Shot and Killed in Gangtok

Gangtok, July 22 – A white stray dog was shot and killed on July 19 in the Kazi Road area of Gangtok. The incident was reported to the NGO People For Animals (PFA) Sikkim, led by Maneka Gandhi, by a concerned local resident.

Initial inquiries revealed little information, as locals were reluctant to speak about the incident. However, it was later found that the dog’s body had been buried nearby. An anonymous source disclosed that the cause of death was a gunshot, though the shooter remains unidentified.

A case was filed at Sadar Thana, prompting the exhumation of the dog’s body. The post-mortem confirmed that the dog had been shot in the chest. This incident is reportedly not the first of its kind in the area.

Animal activist Sagar Singh drew media attention to the case, and Mrs. Rebina Rai of PFA Sikkim has taken charge of the investigation, ultimately burying the dog’s remains at her residence in Assam Lingzey.

PFA Sikkim has condemned the killing and is working with local police to ensure justice. Maneka Gandhi has been notified and is coordinating with SP Gangtok, Tenzing Loden Lepcha, who has committed to a thorough investigation.

This tragic event underscores the need for greater compassion toward animals and aims to raise awareness to prevent future incidents of animal cruelty.
