Tripura’s Jishnu Dev Varma Becomes First State Native Appointed as Telangana Governor

Agartala, July 28, 2024 — In a historic first, Jishnu Dev Varma, the former Deputy Chief Minister of Tripura, has been appointed as the Governor of Telangana. This milestone marks the first time a native of Tripura will serve as a governor outside the state.

Born into the royal family of Tripura, Dev Varma has been a dedicated member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) since the early 1990s, remaining loyal during times when the party had little influence in Tripura, which was dominated by the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

Dev Varma’s political career peaked during his tenure as Tripura’s Deputy Chief Minister from 2018 to 2023, where he managed critical portfolios including Finance, Rural Development, and Power. Despite his recent defeat in the 2024 Assembly Election, his appointment as Governor underscores his significant political and administrative experience.

Dev Varma, an accomplished writer and poet, has also been active in sports and cultural organizations. His appointment as Governor of Telangana is seen as a recognition of his extensive service and dedication to public life.
